Haven’t been in the water for a couple of weeks. The wave forecast wasn’t very optimistic, but I really wanted to get in a session.

I planned to meet at 6:30 at Yoshida but when I arrived, there was only 1 person there and he wasn’t getting ready to surf… Oh.

After taking a peek, I understood why. We then checked out Shizunami – it was a little better with about 20 or do surfers along the length of the beach.

Where was everyone? Katahama? Omaezaki?

Since it was a beautiful day, we decided to drive the extra 30 minutes of so to check omaezaki and here’s what we saw:

Nice looking waves! Unfortunately, there was a Nippon Surfing Association (NSA) contest being held. Tons of surfers were in the water. A little bit too crowded and competitive for us. Maybe next year! <ha ha>

Another rainy day with a forecast for small waves. Small really doesn’t describe the waves today at Yoshida:

One solitary surfer hoping for some rideable waves. A couple of days earlier, the waves at Omaezaki were great, so we decided to make the 30 km trek there.

Although it was raining (albeit not that hard), we weren’t disappointed when we arrived. Here are a few shots. These were taken from the parking lot across the road. Although the waves look small, they are quite a bit bigger than they look. The road is at least 2 or 3 metres higher than the surface of the water.

Much better than Yoshida and surprisingly it wasn’t crowded either. (When we left a couple of hours later, there were about 25 surfers in the water). Although the water in the Shizunami area is fairly clean (compared to Chiba and Ibaraki), the water in Omaezaki looks even cleaner and has a greenish tinge to it. The water in Shizunami is quite dark actually. I was a little hesitant about going to Omaezaki because one of the local longboarders at Yoshida cut his foot quite badly at Omaezaki a few weeks ago. He is certainly better than me and I don’t want to become another surfing statistic!

Had a great (and uneventful) session – had some of my longest rides of the session today. Looking forward to visiting Omaezaki again someday.

Not a very high quality picture, but it was inspiring enough for me to dig out the surf gear. I finally got in contact my friend in Hamamatsu and decided to meet up yesterday. The water wasn’t so cold – just wore my suit and boots – didn’t need gloves and the hood. Had a good time, but unfortunately the beach is so far from the parking lot that I didn’t have the energy to go back to the car to get my cellphone to take some pictures. Maybe next time.

This is a picture from a few days ago from Tatadohama. I think we’ll be going there soon!
