A mere 300 kilometers from the house to Ooarai Sun Beach.  Here’s how it looked just after sunrise. Small but getting bigger. At around 7 am, the crew and I got in the water. The waves were a reasonable size and the new fins seemed to work well. Caught lots of waves in the morning. […]

New fins!
After breaking one of my fins a couple of weeks ago (the right one to be exact), I have been using even older fins from another board.  I thought about buying one replacement fin, but the cost was at least 3,000 yen. A whole set of much better fins cost 10,000 yen. Initial impression? Fast!
Under the Sun Trailer
Many years ago, I thought that it would be nice to do a working holiday to Australia. This trailer for this documentary about Gold Coast and Byron Bay reminded of this. For more information, check out the movie’s site.
Another rainy morning (October 9th)
A familiar sight at Yoshida – rainy, small waves and a couple of fishermen. Next stop – Shizunami.
The official weekly session (October 8th)
It was raining when I woke up this morning. That isn’t enough to stop me from going to the beach, but it certainly makes the roads crowded. The traffic was unbelievable today. It usually takes about 45 minutes to an hour to drive from my home to the beach, but today it took an hour […]
Smoky flavor will makes you hungry!
Excuse the low quality of this photo. I snapped this with my cellphone. In case you can’t read it, here’s what it says: Juicy Pork Rib meets BBQ sauce! Smoky flavor will makes you hungry. Looks unique shape, but VOLUME MANTEN! Good thing I had already ordered it before I saw this confusing catch copy. […]
Something different… (October 7th)
As the title suggests, I decided to do something different today. I would go surfing AFTER work. What a crazy idea – would it work?? A rare appearance by Mr. Fuji – minus the layer of snow. I guess that there will be snow there in the next month or so. This is my first […]
The 280th day of the year – better known as October 6th
It was raining quite heavily this morning but the wave forecast looked promising. Recently we have been visiting several points looking for suitable waves. Would today be the same? As always, the first stop was Yoshida but it had only tiny waves – almost flat. There were only 3 or 4 fisherman there. Surprisingly, they […]
The quest for open waves (October 5th)
Like yesterday, the search began at Yoshida. Here’s how it looked: Eerily similar – wouldn’t you agree? Sunny, fishermen staking out the middle part of the beach and tiny waves.
Shizuoka Longboard Classic (October 4th – 5th)
I’m not a longboarder and I’m not really interested in watching surf contests, but I just happened to be here at the right? wrong? time. While looking for waves, we stopped at Shizunami. The parking lots were really full – it’s not summer and the waves weren’t big at all so that could only mean […]
