Oh My! (September 18th)

Another rainy day with a forecast for small waves.  Small really doesn’t describe the waves today at Yoshida:

One solitary surfer hoping for some rideable waves.  A couple of days earlier, the waves at Omaezaki were great, so we decided to make the 30 km trek there.

Although it was raining (albeit not that hard), we weren’t disappointed when we arrived.  Here are a few shots.  These were taken from the parking lot across the road.  Although the waves look small, they are quite a bit bigger than they look.  The road is at least 2 or 3 metres higher than the surface of the water.

Much better than Yoshida and surprisingly it wasn’t crowded either.  (When we left a couple of hours later, there were about 25 surfers in the water).  Although the water in the Shizunami area is fairly clean (compared to Chiba and Ibaraki), the water in Omaezaki looks even cleaner and has a greenish tinge to it.  The water in Shizunami is quite dark actually.  I was a little hesitant about going to Omaezaki because one of the local longboarders at Yoshida cut his foot quite badly at Omaezaki a few weeks ago.  He is certainly better than me and I don’t want to become another surfing statistic!

Had a great (and uneventful) session – had some of my longest rides of the session today.  Looking forward to visiting Omaezaki again someday.
