Here’s what it looked like at Yoshida. But word on the street said that Shizunami was pumping. Surfers are infamous for saying “You should have been here yesterday” or “You should have been at <place 1> instead of <place 2>” so I was skeptical to say the least. However, it is only a few minutes drive from Yoshida to Shizunami and I hadn’t put on my wetsuit yet…
This is what we saw from the parking lot at Shizunami. Quite different than Yoshida!
As you can see, Shizunami is a long beach. Look at this set coming in. Not too many people out either.
Here are a couple more shots:
In case you are thinking that this long-haired surfer is a woman, you are mistaken. It is some dude with massive dreadlocks.
The waves were surprisingly powerful – the perfect combination of tide, wind and the approaching typhoon. It was work even paddling out. I even walked along a concrete pier once to avoid paddling. However, the jump from the pier to the water was higher than I imagined! I was a little bit hesitant about jumping with my board but everything worked out smoothly. Not sure if I will do that again though.
After we were done at Shizunami at around 9 am – we decided to stop back at Yoshida. Here’s what it looked like:
Fun. Fun.
